Rock, water lines and green, set by hand

Low-water yards are the heart of it. Hank also lays sod, runs sprinklers and drip, pours curbing and does the grading with his own machines.

Bands of grey, white and red gravel divided by rings of river cobble, with two red boulders
  1. Front yard finished in red lava rock with tan gravel islands, boulders and agaves

    Rockscape and low-water yards

Boulders, cobble, lava rock and gravel in place of a thirsty lawn. The heart of what Hank builds.

Hank lays out the beds, sets the boulders first, then fills in with cobble and gravel in colours that suit your house. Plants are picked for wind, frost and summer heat at four thousand feet.

  2. Front yard dry creek bed of river cobbles with flagstone steps and a small white footbridge
    02

    Dry creek beds

A good-looking way to carry storm water across your lot instead of letting it cut ruts.

The creek follows the way water already wants to run. River cobble lines the bed, boulders hold the bends, and flagstone steps or a small footbridge get you across.

  3. Large granite boulders set in golden gravel with drifts of river cobble
    03

    Boulders and concrete curbing

Boulders set where they look natural, and smooth curbing to edge your lawn and beds.

Boulders go in a third deep so they look like they were always there. Curbing is poured in one continuous run, straight where it should be and smooth where it curves.

  4. Curved green lawn edged with a concrete mow curb, a cobble border and a paver path
    04

    Lawn (sod) and sprinklers

Old lawn out, soil prepared, fresh sod down. Sprinkler and drip systems designed, installed and repaired.

The old lawn and debris come out, topsoil, compost and fertilizer get tilled in, then the sod goes down. Timers, valves and drip lines are set up and explained before he leaves.

  5. Tiered split-face block planters with red yucca, lavender and lava rock
    05

    Pavers and block work

Raised block planters, low walls and paver paths to finish it all off.

Split-face block planters, seat walls and paver paths tie the rock, lawn and patio together and give the plants a raised bed out of the wind.

  6. A large graded backyard in decomposed granite with a flagstone path and a small footbridge
    06

    Tractor, trenching and mini-skid

Grading and hauling with his own machines. Trenching often costs less than renting the equipment.

A compact tractor for grading and moving rock, a mini-skid with a trencher for water and sprinkler lines. Call for hourly rates.
